A key obstacle identified is the "Risk-taking Mindset." The lectures highlighted that the residents' reluctance to embrace change and fear of public questioning could hinder Uwajima's progress. The future of Uwajima depends on its residents' willingness to embrace growth, overcome fears, and actively shape the city's direction. The importance of a community's collective risk-taking to secure a promising future for Uwajima was emphasized.

]]> A few days ago, we concluded a lecture series at the Uwajima City Office, focusing on what "Digital Transformation" signifies for a small, depopulating city like Uwajima, which primarily relies on agriculture, fishing, and pearl farming for its economy. Intriguingly, this region stands out as one of the leading producers of mandarin oranges, pearls, sea bream, and, more recently, farmed tuna, indicating significant potential for economic growth in the future. However, the challenge remains for Uwajima to evolve, not just in embracing technological advancements but in other aspects as well. 

One potential barrier we've identified is a "Risk-taking Mindset." Living in a city blessed with stunning natural beauty can, paradoxically, limit residents' lifestyles. While such a lifestyle might have been acceptable in the 18th or 19th centuries, it is less so today, with people carrying smartphones that connect them to a vast wealth of knowledge and information. During our seminar on "Digital Transformation," attended by about 20 individuals, we received no questions, leading us to speculate. Perhaps our presentations were unengaging, or the attendees were already well-versed in digital transformation. Alternatively, it could be that a fear of public questioning, indicative of a lack of risk-taking mindset, held them back.

Change necessitates personal growth and transformation, which inevitably involves time, money, and often pain. If the mere act of asking questions in a public setting is perceived as painful by the people of Uwajima, the city's future may not be as promising as it could be.

Our birthplaces are beyond our control, but we can choose where we live and how we grow internally, overcoming whatever fears we face, to shape our futures and the future of our city. Uwajima is the stage upon which its residents were born, and it is up to them to decide what kind of future they want to build on this platform. As someone who grew up here, I cannot overstate my hope for a bright future for Uwajima, fueled by a collective embrace of risk-taking.

Live-Streaming Video: Uwajima Dance Festival, Charity for Maui People

On Monday, October 9th, CSTOYS opened a charity booth at a local dance event to support Maui called "Uwajima Dance Festival" at Uwajima Kisaia Plaza starting at 10 a.m. And we had our Capsule Toy Vending Machines to sell our Tokusatsu toys to local customers and all the sales (15000 yen)  was donated to Japan Red Cross Society through the organizer, the Hawaiian Festival Committee. In the total from the event, became 125,368 yen and it was donated to Japan Red Cross Society through Uwajima City. 

 

 

Ehime Prefecture and the State of Hawaii are sister states, and Uwajima City and Honolulu are also sister cities. People of Ehime Prefecture and Uwajima City do care for their friends in Hawaii, and organized this charity event for Maui Wildfire Disaster. There were donation boxes on the day of the event, they invited as many people as possible to attend and participate, and kindly ask for your help in spreading the word. Our FM radio program, Uwajima World Link, will cover this particular event in coming weeks as well.

The other day, San Gabriel Nursery & Florist, a former overseas agricultural training destination, sent me 100th anniversary goods and articles introduced in local newspapers through my seniors. 

In the document written about history, I was touched on the overseas agricultural trainees involved in SGN, and I am deeply moved to think that I was also a part of the 100th anniversary when I worked as a trainee in 1984-86. 

SGN has now reduced its management scale, and unfortunately the acceptance of agricultural trainees from Japan has ended. But when I think that former trainees who have learned a lot here are now working in Japan and the world, I realize that it is important to set their own goals and continue diligently even if they are small at first glance.

]]> Uwajima East High School has been designated as one of the Super Science High Schools by MEXT (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology) since 2018. The students actively participate in scientific research and development to promote Uwajima's various industries. March is the last month of their school term, and they introduce their research projects to the public. Office Seike, the body of CSTOYS International, has been working with the school and live-streaming its presentations since 2021.

This coming Friday, March 3rd, 2023, another SSH event will be held at Uwajima Nanyo Culture Theater and Fukuromachi Shopping Arcade. We are so proud that we can participate this event and help promoting their research projects through YouTube.

    8月9日の昨日、平成30年豪雨で甚大な被害があった宇和島市吉田町の吉田公民館で、避難所運営訓練がありました。ここで私たち宇和島NPOセンターは、HUGゲーム（Hinanjo/避難所・Unei/運営。Game/ゲーム）を行いました。

    On August 9, there was an evacuation center management training at the Yoshida Community Center in Yoshida Town, Uwajima City, where there was tremendous damage due to the heavy rain in 2018. We at the Uwajima NPO Center played HUG games（Hinanjo/避難所・Unei/運営。Game/ゲーム） with the attendees.　

    これは避難所運営をみんなで体験するゲームとして静岡県が開発したものです。

    Shizuoka Prefecture developed this as a game where everyone can experience evacuation center management.

    HUGゲームは避難者の年齢や性別、国籍やそれぞれが抱える事情を書かれたカードに従って、避難所運営をいかに適切になっている体育館や教室の平面図にどれだけ適切に配置できるか、また避難所で起こる様々な出来事に対応していくかを模擬体験するシュミレーションゲームです。

    HUG game is to simulate how appropriately the evacuation center can be managed on the floor plan according to the situation cards with several factors like the age, gender, nationality, and circumstances of the evacuees, and how to respond to various events that occur in the evacuation center.

    また今年は宇和島NPOセンター独自の防災イベント「BOUSAIゼミな〜る」が、「防災推進国民大会2022（通称：ぼうさいこくたい2022）」に出展されることになりました。このイベントは10月22日、23日に兵庫県の「人と未来防災センター（Disasster Reduction and Human Renovation Institution)」にて開催され、全国から311団体が出展します。宇和島NPOセンターの出展ブースでは、これまで取り組んできた「（災害の）匂いのレシピ」を再現し会場の方に体験してもらい、防災を自分の事として考えてもらえればと思います。

    This year, the Uwajima NPO Center's unique disaster prevention event, "BOUSAI Seminar," will be exhibited at the National Disaster Prevention Promotion Tournament 2022 (commonly known as Bosaikokutai 2022). This event will be held at the DRI, Disaster Reduction and Human Renovation Institution, in Hyogo Prefecture on October 22nd and 23rd, and 311 disaster-relief-related organizations will exhibit there from all over the country. At our exhibition booth, we plan to display the "Recipe for the Smell of Disaster" that we have been working on, and we hope the attendees to smell and feel disaster prevention as their own thing.

    今回の出展には、愛媛県立宇和島東高等学校、愛媛県立宇和島南中等教育学校、兵庫県の灘高等学校、岡山県立矢掛高校、福島県立福島高等学校の有志の生徒さんも参加されます。

    This exhibition will also include volunteer students from Ehime Prefectural Uwajima Higashi High School, Ehime Prefectural Uwajima Minami Secondary School, Hyogo Prefecture's Nada High School, Okayama Prefectural Yakage High School, and Fukushima Prefectural Fukushima High School.
